Exceptional pair of ceramic table lamps designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi during the 1960s. These highly sculptural lamps are exemplary of Londi’s celebrated approach to mid-century Italian ceramics, combining architectural form, refined texture, and earthy tonal variations with remarkable craftsmanship.
The lamps feature an elegant stacked silhouette composed of tapered and domed volumes finished in a soft off-white crackle glaze. Deeply incised geometric bands in warm terracotta, rose, and sienna tones wrap around the bases, creating a rhythmic decorative surface characteristic of Londi’s work during Bitossi’s most influential creative period.
Both examples retain the handwritten signature underneath: “Cav. G. Bitossi & Figli Italy,” one of the historic marks used by the renowned Tuscan manufacturer for artistic production and export pieces during the postwar years. The mark references Cavaliere Guido Bitossi and Sons, reflecting the company’s long-standing family heritage in Montelupo Fiorentino, one of Italy’s historic ceramic centers.
Newly fitted with custom woven shades featuring a bold geometric pattern that perfectly complements the lamps’ textured ceramic surfaces and strong modernist presence.
Aldo Londi (1911–2003) was one of the most influential Italian ceramic designers of the twentieth century. After joining Bitossi as artistic director in 1946, he helped transform the historic Tuscan manufactory into an internationally celebrated design house. Londi became renowned for his sculptural forms, experimental glazes, and richly textured surfaces that blended traditional Italian craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. His work, particularly from the 1950s through the 1970s, remains highly sought after today and is considered central to the history of postwar Italian ceramic design.
