A pair of floor lamps crafted by Afra & Tobia Scarpa in 1973, the "Tamburo" stands out as a unique lighting fixture from the renowned Italian lighting brand Flos. The term "Tamburo," which means "drum" in Italian, aptly describes the lamp's cylindrical design. Originally intended for outdoor settings like patios, walkways, and entrances, its elegant versatility makes it equally appealing for indoor spaces. Made from cast aluminum with a sleek lacquered finish, the "Tamburo" lamp includes a structured, translucent Plexiglas diffuser that emits light upward. Additionally, an internal louvered grille positioned beneath a glass pane directs light downward. This clever design guarantees optimal lighting in multiple directions, enhancing the atmosphere of any environment.

Afra & Tobia Scarpa

Afra (1937–2011) and Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935) were a renowned Italian husband-and-wife design duo celebrated for their contributions to architecture, interior design, and industrial design. They met while studying architecture at the Università Iuav di Venezia, graduating in 1957, and began collaborating professionally in 1959. Their work is characterized by a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modernist principles, emphasizing both aesthetics and functionality. In 1973, they designed the "Tamburo" floor lamp, a distinctive lighting fixture produced by the esteemed Italian lighting company Flos. The name "Tamburo," Italian for "drum," reflects the lamp's cylindrical shape. This innovative design was specifically created for outdoor environments such as patios, promenades, and entryways, but its aesthetic versatility also makes it suitable for indoor use. Constructed from cast aluminum with a lacquered finish, the "Tamburo" lamp features a structured, translucent Plexiglas diffuser that disperses light upward, while an internal louvered grille beneath a glass pane directs light downward. This thoughtful engineering ensures optimal illumination in various directions, enhancing the ambiance of any space. The Scarpas' designs are included in the permanent collections of several major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Throughout their careers, they received numerous accolades, such as the Compasso d'Oro award in 1970 for their "Soriana" armchair designed for Cassina. Their enduring legacy continues to influence contemporary design, reflecting a seamless integration of form, function, and innovative use of materials.
