b. In 1965 Hervé Van der Straeten is a renowned French designer celebrated for his bold and innovative creations in jewelry, furniture, and decorative arts. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he initially gained attention in the mid 1980’s with his unique jewelry designs, which led to collaborations with prominent fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler, and Christian Lacroix. Transitioning from jewelry to furniture design in the early 1990s, Van der Straeten established his own workshops in Bagnolet, a suburb of Paris. There, he and his team of skilled artisans craft limited-edition pieces that blend sculptural forms with meticulous craftsmanship. His work is characterized by the use of both noble materials like bronze, marble, and lacquer, as well as industrial elements such as anodized aluminum and polished steel. His contributions to design have been recognized with numerous honors, including the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" (Living Heritage Company) label from the French Ministry of Culture in 2007, and he was appointed Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2008. Today, Van der Straeten's works are highly sought after by collectors worldwide and are featured in several public collections, including the Mobilier National and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
